How to Breathe Life into your Wardrobe – by Natasha Edge

During the long months of lockdown this year, I know I’m not the only one who has spent time decluttering at home and in particular my wardrobe, not always for pleasure but because I have had much more time than normal and I’m always a big believer in investing a little bit in my clothes!

I have spoken to a lot of women who have wardrobes overflowing with clothes, but they all have the same problem – you have nothing to wear? Maybe you’re not sure what to do with your clothes and you’re getting tired of wearing them? So instead of throwing them away, why not breathe new life into them and be responsible to the environment? Believe me there is nothing more satisfying than creating a new item or outfit out of your own clothes.

Creating a more sustainable closet requires little more than a few pieces of clothing you already own. A cosy old sweater can quickly be updated with a little imagination. Those jeans you haven’t worn in years are just begging to be transformed into a cute pair of shorts or a denim skirt. A combination of creativity and DIY can quickly revive your tired wardrobe. If you struggle with this type of creative flair, then you can always look at Pinterest for some great ides.

First things first. If you have two separate or seasonal wardrobes then think about putting away those clothes you are not going to need for a while. My wardrobe is non seasonal (I try to wear all my clothes all year round). Probably about now you are thinking — this girl is crazy! — (maybe) – why waste your time with all this faffing about! Believe me it will make you so happy once you’re done and you will have that smug feeling of self-satisfaction.

I am sure, some of you have things in your wardrobe that you don’t like any more and don’t wear, but maybe you don’t want to get rid of them, so, why not breathe some new life into those items and give them a second chance?

Below I have suggested a few different options and ideas that you can do at home. These are quick and simple to do and you can even get the kids involved!

Add Iron-On Patches To Basics

Amp up your basic tees, plain shirts, or jeans by adding embroidered patches to them! This will allow you to create designs that will be uniquely yours, as well as breathe new life into clothes that would have otherwise been tossed out.

Add Lace To Lengthen

For a top that is too short for your liking, lengthen it with a lace panel for a sweet, classy twist. Pair your new lace panel blouse with your favourite pair of pants for a feminine yet professional look!

Turn Your Old Jeans Into Shorts

Simply snip off the ends of your old jeans to turn them into a pair of shorts. As a guide for length, use a pair of shorts which has a length you are already comfortable with and place it above your jeans as you snip off the excess denim. Fray the ends of the shorts by tugging at the threads.

Dress Down Your Office Wear

We all have an old work shirt lying around somewhere, so why not transform it into something fashionable?

To do so, button up the shirt and tie it up so it will fit your body like an off-shoulder top!

Embroidery

Now don’t get me wrong I’m no seamstress, in fact even taking a hem up is a challenge to me. When I think about embroidery I think about old women creating amazing things, and yes I thought it was too difficult for me. But after trying it, I realise it’s very simple and can be fun for all ages!

Tie-Dye & Paint

Another option, now more on-trend than ever and you just need bleach or some clothing dye in a few different colours. I have tried it at home and yes, we are literally wearing the t shirts!

Painting your clothes is another very creative way to express yourself, you can draw some flowers or abstract faces and much more; I took my inspiration from Pinterest.

And finally, there are so many different things you can add to your clothes like patches, sequins, or jewellery which will give your clothes so much more personality.

I hope you enjoyed reading this blog and have a few ideas and inspiration to breathe life into your clothes and accessories. But if it is nothing to do with your old clothes and you would love to have a Personal Shopping experience, please give me a call or WhatsApp me on 07825 509318.
